OrangeMouth: A mini Mandarin introduction

6/7/2014

Hey people!

If you look through my last few posts, you'll see they're in Chinese! I've been posting them as a part of my Language for Professional Communication class. Yesterday's post about social entrepreneurs reminded me that, in all the talk of other social enterprises and their founders, I hadn't really talked about my company, OrangeMouth, the entire point of this blog!

My presentation for this unit is at noon today so this is a bit last minute, but I shot a quick mini-intro for OrangeMouth (in Mandarin of course) for fun late yesterday, and thought it would be a nice way to wrap up all the Chinese posts.

If anyone is interested, the transcript of the text is in the description box.

Enjoy! (:

Picture

  4. 感召

Wow! These character traits are really difficult to describe in Mandarin! :p

Dedication: Many people talk about being passionate about your work. I do agree that you should love what you do, however, there comes a time when passion fades. That's when dedication starts. There will be many an all-nighter to pull when starting a business, and I think that's part of what keeps you there when the passion has cooled down a bit.

Leadership skills: It takes a leader to run a team, and that's what any social enterprise is, a team. A good leader works alongside their employees and leads by example.

Carrying on in the same vein, a social entrepreneur must be someone who can inspire others, call them to action. If they are unable to do this even in small settings (for example with friends), how they they compel a much larger audience to believe in their vision?

Phew! And those are just three of the qualities one would expect in a company founder. My brain is still whirring thinking of qualities that are good and qualities that are necessary for a social entrepreneur to possess, so I'll likely revisit this topic again in a few weeks. Keep an eye out for it!

Until next time! (:

(Singapore)

This channel actually has a few interesting videos on social enterprise. See here.

Wikipedia:

To the right is another video that is meant to be an introduction to social enterprises, uploaded by the Department of Home Affairs in Hong Kong. The video is in Cantonese but subtitled in English.

Something that I noticed in this video, is that everyone they interviewed was female. This can very much be considered a contrast from the past, where the business field was particularly male-dominated.

As you may be able to deduct from the picture, I'm a student at the University of Portsmouth, pursing a degree in International Development Studies and Languages (ok, so the last part might not be glaringly obvious from just the photo). It just so happens that the language happens to be Mandarin. In the final year of a degree (or half a degree in my case) in Languages, one of the required classes is Language for Professional Communication.

As delightful as all of that information isn't, the real question here is obvious, "Can you say(read, write, understand, cook, wear, etc) something in Chinese/Mandarin?" Yes I can, but please let me finish explaining what's going on first.*

For this Language for Professional Communication class we're required to pick a topic and present on it in Chinese at the end of the semester. Thing is, it's not just as simple as a presentation. We have to do a video, podcast, create a website, brochures, etc. to accompany said presentation.

WELL! The end of the semester (and uni life) is fast approaching, so it seemed best to get a move on. As it turns out, I already have a website, so have decided to write some pieces (and perhaps a video or two) in Chinese on my chosen topic - social enterprise - and post them on this blog, as OrangeMouth falls quite securely under that scope (and would undoubtedly be the subject of several of the entries).

And that's it for today, but keep an eye out for some bi-lingual posts in the near future!

Remember to #livepositive!

* 什么。

This year, I started a business - OrangeMouth Co. - a social enterprise, with a focus on Emotional and Mental Health Awareness.

OrangeMouth already has a website and Facebook page, this blog will be about my experiences starting the business - the good, the bad, and the orange.

OM also has a blog, you'll definitely want to check it out! We post on Tunesdays (you get it when you see it!), and soon regularly on Fridays, and videos on Sundays.

See you in a bit!
